Good Friday, the Firing Squad, and the Gas Chamber

From the Catholic Mobilizing Network...

Good Friday is a time to contemplate capital punishment.

Today we remember that Jesus suffered and died for us in an execution at the hands of the state.

At the same time, we remember that thousands of our brothers and sisters in the U.S. face the same gruesome fate — and that we, as Christians, have a responsibility to advocate against these attacks on human dignity.

On this particular Good Friday, this responsibility looms larger than ever. Two states — South Carolina and Arizona — have recently announced plans to restart executions in the coming weeks.

(This is very important. Please read more here.)

Today, Good Friday, we weep over the execution by a state of a convicted criminal who carried the message of our salvation. That message of salvation tells us to see Christ in others. If we are about that project, can we allow state-sanctioned executions to take others?

Legislation to Protect Worker Health Care During Strikes a Necessity

[TRIANGLE, VA] United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International President Cecil E. Roberts issued the following statement today:

“I applaud Sens. Sharrod Brown (D-OH) and Bob Casey (D-PA) and all co-sponsors for introducing the Striking Workers Healthcare Protection Act., which would require employers to continue to provide health insurance coverage for striking workers and their families.

“UMWA miners on strike at Warrior Met Coal had their company-provided health insurance cut off April 1 of last year. Even though Warrior Met used this tactic as a way to discourage the workers from exercising their right to strike, it didn’t work The UMWA immediately picked up their coverage, so that not a single worker or his or her family was without health insurance.

“The UMWA has spent more than $5.1 million in health insurance coverage for the striking miners and their families. That is on top of the $15.5 million paid for strike benefits.

“These miners have been fighting for a fair contract for almost a year now, if it wasn’t for the union, they and their families would be faced with the terrible choice of either medical care or fighting for what they deserve. I salute the legislators who are taking a stand in both the Senate and the House against these unfair corporate tactics.”

Note: Companion legislation, H.R. 6557, was introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03).

"As I drop in tonight I pray my shift will go all right..."

I just saw where a mine worker named Charles Inboden graciously posted this prayer on a mine workers' Facebook page. If you don't know what a mantrip is, I have put in a video and a song. The song is from an old-timer and from a time and place when the mantrips were called "lizards."  Please pray for Charles and for everyone doing the hard and dangerous work.

Charles Inboden wrote:

As I drop in tonight I pray my shift will go all right I go down there to make a living just to pay my bills and fill my kitchen I come home and my kids are smiling I thank the Lord another not I survived as I ride that man trip down in that hole I pray to the Lord then I come out whole.

Just a simple prayer for all the miners past present and future.
